John's Story

77-year-old John, from Edinburgh, has been living with a disability since he was born. Despite being told he would never walk or talk as a child, John has defied all odds and lived a very full life, working as a roadie for famous musicians, and as an activist for the rights of disabled people across the country.

John lives alone and is now almost entirely wheelchair bound. He has always needed a bit of help with some cleaning and household tasks, but felt that his physical health had deteriorated significantly, to the point that he felt he needed more help and struggled to cook for himself too.

John reached out to LifeCare for support, and is visited by our home help, Nok, once a week, and now receives Meals on Wheels twice a week.

On why he felt he needed LifeCare’s support, and the difference it has made to his life, John said:

“I came to the realisation that I just couldn’t do as much for myself as I could 10 or even 5 years ago. I’ve always lived a very independent life even though I live with a disability, but it’s just part of getting older. Everybody that works for LifeCare is marvellous, they always find a way to support me and are always there for me. I love Nok, my Home Help, to bits. She cleans my whole house for me, never judges me, and we have a great laugh every week. I also get Meals on Wheels twice a week, and for two days a week I don’t have to do any cooking, its brilliant! The food that they serve up is really something – the chefs that prepare it should be on the telly! I’ve gotten to know the drivers really well as well. The support from LifeCare has changed my life. I don’t feel isolated because I know I’ve got them coming to see me three times a week, and that they’re on the other end of the phone if I need them. The people that I come in to contact with are so friendly, and so easy to get on with! Anyone who is thinking of using LifeCare services should do it now, it’s the best thing you’ll ever do!
