  • Carers Week: Edith & Geoff’s Story 💚

Edith and Geoff have been together for an incredible 69 years, and are due to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary in November 2025. After Edith was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2018, Geoff became her full time carer. In 2019, Edith started using LifeCare’s day club services, giving her a chance to socialise, and Geoff some much needed respite from the challenges being a full time carer can bring.

On the difference LifeCare has made to their lives, Geoff said:

“Edith loves coming along to the club to see all the team. They truly run an excellent service; I couldn’t fault it. The LifeCare team spent time getting to know us both, to understand what Edith likes - and doesn’t! They have a good giggle each day she is in, with lots of different activities going on and plenty of time to chat with others. It’s such a comfort to know she’s being well looked after, and it gives me a wee bit of a break. I would highly recommend LifeCare to others, I think we would really struggle without it”.

Being a carer is incredibly rewarding, but can be very hard. Don’t forget that LifeCare is here to help. To find out more about the support we offer, visit the link in our bio 💚

  • It’s Carers Week, a chance to highlight the challenges unpaid carers face & recognise the incredible contribution they make 💚

There are approximately 800,000 unpaid carers in Scotland. It would cost an estimated £13.1 billion every year to replace the care they provide. Despite this, many carers simply do not recognise themselves as unpaid carers.

💚 If you provide care and support to a family member, friend or neighbour then you are an unpaid carer.

💚 An unpaid carer does not need to be living with the person they care for.

💚Anybody can become a carer at any time in their life, and sometimes to more than one person at a time.

Being an unpaid carer is not easy. Don’t forget that you matter too! If you are in need of a bit of extra support, LifeCare is here to help. To find out more, visit our website at the link in our bio 🔗

She felt inspired to volunteer with LifeCare as her Mother had dementia, and she wanted to give something back to the community when she was able.

The way their eyes light up when we share a joke, or I repeat things in ways they can understand. The immense satisfaction I feel that I'm enabling somebody's Mum, Dad, Partner, or Grandparent to participate in the world around them in a place of safety and compassion. If you’re thinking about it, do it, Volunteering at LifeCare is one of the best decisions you'll ever make.”

  • Volunteers’ Week: Debbie’s Story 💚

31-year-old Debbie started volunteering with LifeCare in November 2023. Debbie is involved with our Bingo sessions at the LifeCare Centre, which take place on a monthly basis in our Community Cafe, CafeLife, bringing people of all ages from the local community together. When asked about her volunteering journey with LifeCare, she said:

“I have had amazing experiences and opportunities throughout my volunteering, but I consider the people I meet as the biggest benefit and knowing that getting together is bringing the happiness into the day-to-day.

I would definitely recommend volunteering at LifeCare! Together we keep the bonds of community. Volunteering is not solely beneficial for users of services, it's an experience in itself, where the volunteer is included, welcomed and appreciated within the community.”

  • Rita & David’s Story: Dementia Awareness Week 💚

Rita and David met 58 years ago at the Tropicana Disco in Jersey. David asked Rita to dance one night. And the rest is history! The couple got married 18 months later and went on to have 2 children, and 2 beloved grandchildren.

David was diagnosed with dementia in 2016, and in 2022 started getting support from LifeCare’s Outreach and Day Club Services. David is visited at home by Angelo from LifeCare’s Outreach service once a week, who takes him out and about in the community to places like The Botanic Gardens. David also attends LifeCare’s Day Club twice a week, allowing him to connect with others and take part in fun activities. Rita uses the time that David is with LifeCare to socialise with friends, and volunteers at a local charity shop, giving her much needed respite from her caring role.

On the support that LifeCare has given to her and David, Rita said:

“I couldn’t live without LifeCare.. I need this break. The staff are all angels, so good with the clients, so patient. They’re all so laid back and have taught me how to be laid back too. David thoroughly enjoys coming. He still wants to communicate.. even though the way he communicates has changed, he is still a very social person who loves being around people.”

You can read Rita and David’s full story, and find out how about how you can get support for yourself or a loved one who is living with dementia at the link in our bio ✨

  • ‼️ LifeCare Edinburgh and @vintagevibesed have urged The Scottish Government not to go ahead with controversial proposals to introduce a fee for Volunteers who need checks under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups Scheme (PVG) ‼️

In the response to the consultation, LifeCare and Vintage Vibes state:

“Both LifeCare Edinburgh and Vintage Vibes wholeheartedly disagree with the proposal to move to a fee discount structure for volunteers in Qualifying Voluntary Organisations. The current status quo of no cost PVG’s is essential in empowering third sector organisations to recruit, train, support and retain volunteers effectively and safely.

If implemented, these proposals are likely to have a significant, detrimental impact on both LifeCare and Vintage Vibes’ capacity to deliver the life changing, preventative and person-centred support upon which hundreds of older people and their dedicated unpaid carers have come to rely.

LifeCare Edinburgh and Vintage Vibes urge The Scottish Government in the strongest terms to not move forward with this proposal.”

The immense satisfaction I feel that I'm enabling somebody's Mum, Dad, Partner, or Grandparent to participate in the world around them in a place of safety and compassion. If you’re thinking about it, do it, Volunteering at LifeCare is one of the best decisions you'll ever make.”

Volunteers’ Week: Zee’s Story 💚 56-year-old Zee has been volunteering with LifeCare since November 2023. She supports clients who are living with dementia at one of LifeCare’s day clubs. She felt inspired to volunteer with LifeCare as her Mother had dementia, and she wanted to give something back to the community when she was able. When asked about the impact volunteering with LifeCare has on her, she said: “What I enjoy the most about volunteering are the little moments, the times a member smiles at me after I've listened to their story, or pats my hand because they haven't got the right words to express their thanks. Volunteers’ Week: Debbie’s Story 💚

It’s Friday Fundraiser 🎉 and today we want to shine a light on our Trustee, Jonathan Erskine!

Jonathan will be taking part in the Great North Swim to raise vital funds for LifeCare! Jonathan’s Dad has used LifeCare’s services for many years, which inspired him to get involved. He said:

“I will be taking part in the 2 mile swim on Lake Windermere, and I hope that every stroke will help make a difference in the lives of older people in Edinburgh. My family has benefited from the services provided by LifeCare - particularly my dad - and I want to help to ensure that others can benefit for years to come.”

Good luck and thank you Jonathan! To make a donation, visit justgiving.com and search for Jonathan Erskine Great North Swim 💚

Rita & David’s Story: Dementia Awareness Week 💚

‼️ LifeCare Edinburgh and @vintagevibesed have urged The Scottish Government not to go ahead with controversial proposals to introduce a fee for Volunteers who need checks under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups Scheme (PVG) ‼️
